Chipmaker Broadcom Corp. will acquire a unit of
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. for $192.8 million, reports
Bloomberg News.
Broadcom, of Irvine, California, inherits more than 530 employees and gets access to customers including Sony Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co., the world's biggest TV maker. The deal should close in the fourth quarter, Broadcom said in a statement.
Broadcom, whose customers now include LG Electronics Inc., has a chance to add larger clients before the U.S. switches to digital television next year, rendering older models obsolete and increasing demand for less expensive digital TVs.
